The 2008 March on Washington Piedmont/Triad Organizing Effort is beginning local grassroots organizing to gain support for the 2008 March on Washington for LGBT Equality, projected to take place April 2008 in Washington, D.C. before the next presidential election.
All persons in the UNCG area interested in helping The Piedmont/Triad Organizing Effort in spreading word about the 2008 March and in networking, are asked to contact the Public Contact person, for the UNCG Area, Samantha Korb, at kittiegirl86@aol.com, (336) 255-4417 . Interest and organizing meetings will be held in the near future after more substantial grassroots organizing and networking efforts can be made.
As you may know, there have been 4 LGBT Marches on Washington, all with specific causes, the 1979 March on Washington brought the LGBT community together and visible for the first time, the 1987 March on Washington demanded immediate action for HIV/AIDS Prevention, the 1993 March on Washington praised the election of Bill Clinton and the promises he initially made to the LGBT community about gays in the military and same sex marriage, and the 2000 March on Washington was in support of a Democratic party victory to strengthen LGBT rights. Now its 2005, and 2008 is still a couple of years away, but that doesn't mean we need to be complacent about LGBT activism. The March on Washington in 2008 isn't just about gay marriage or a particular issue, but about full equality for the LGBT community. This is about the future of the LGBT community and the rights it deserves and demands, not asks for.
The original call for the 2008 March was made by Robin Tyler, Executive Director of the DontAmend.com Equality Campaign and initiator of the 1979 and 2000 Marches on Washington. The Piedmont/Triad Organizing Effort was formed July 26, 2005. The Main Organizing Effort and Media Contact is Matt Hill, matt@matthillnc.com, 336.391.9528.
